Originally intended for mass production, Barbara Bloom's A Birthday Party for Everything is a paper and cardboard kit for celebrating the universe: party hats, balloons, paper plates, napkins and party favors, each item emblazoned with a unique image. The subjects range from the smallest to largest matter known to man: subatomic particles, cells, clothing patterns, house plans, city maps, planetary maps, all the way up to the intergalactic, all brought within the scale of the handheld.

Photographer, designer, and installation artist Barbara Bloom has built her career on questioning appearances, exploring the desire for possessions, and commenting on the act of collecting. The Collections of Barbara Bloom, which accompanies a retrospective of the same title at the International Center of Photography and Martin-Gropius-Bau, explores all aspects of her oeuvre, including works from past multimedia installations and newly made pieces, as well as objects from her vast personal archive of ephemera and advertisements. In some cases, Bloom revisits previous installations and adds new elements, resisting the delineation between past and present in her work. The Collections of Barbara Bloom is an expansion of a project developed as part of Bloom's Wexner Art Center Residency Award in 1998 and includes texts by David Hickey and Susan Tallman.
